How Tick Hosting's Hibernation System Works

The Tick Hosting free Minecraft server hosting homepage

Every free server on Tick Hosting runs on a Smart Hibernation System, and understanding how it actually behaves saves a lot of confusion the first time you or a friend tries to reconnect to a quiet server. This is exactly what happens, in order.

Why hibernation exists

Free hosting only works at scale if idle servers are not sitting there consuming real hardware resources for nobody. Hibernation puts a server to sleep the moment it is genuinely empty, freeing up that capacity, and wakes it back up the instant someone actually wants to play. It is what makes offering real, unlimited-duration free servers possible in the first place.

The exact timeline

  1. Server active — while at least one player is online, the server runs at full performance with nothing different from a normal server.
  2. 5-minute timer — the moment the last player disconnects, a 5-minute countdown starts. This is a grace period, if someone reconnects within those 5 minutes, hibernation never triggers at all.
  3. Hibernation begins — after 5 minutes with nobody online, the server saves everything (world, player data, configuration) and enters sleep mode.
  4. Wake on connect — when any player tries to join, the server automatically wakes up and finishes booting within roughly 30-90 seconds. Nothing needs to be done manually, on your end or ours.

What it looks like when you try to join a sleeping server

The first connection attempt to a hibernated server will usually fail, and that is expected, not a bug. You will typically see one of:

  • io.netty.channel.ConnectTimeoutException: connection timed out
  • "Server is starting, please wait..."
  • "Can't reach server"

All three simply mean the server is in the middle of waking up. Wait 30-90 seconds and try connecting again, it will come up normally.

Is anything ever lost?

No. Before entering hibernation, the server performs a full save of world data, player inventories, and configuration. When it wakes back up, everything is exactly where you left it, builds, items, progress, all of it.

When hibernation does not apply

If the server is already active (anyone online), new players join instantly with no delay at all, hibernation only ever triggers on a genuinely empty server. It also does not apply to premium servers at all: premium plans run 24/7 with no hibernation and no wake-up delay, ever, regardless of player activity. See our free vs premium comparison if constant uptime matters for your project.

If something seems off

If a server does not wake up after a couple of minutes of retrying, that is no longer normal hibernation behavior and is worth a support look. Full technical details also live in our help center's hibernation article, and our Discord is the fastest way to reach support directly.

Getting started

If you have not created a server yet, our free plan includes the full hibernation system by default, no setup required, it just works out of the box.
