Free and premium servers on Tick Hosting are not different in kind, both are real, full Minecraft servers with a file manager, console access, and support for plugins or mods. The differences are specific, and knowing exactly what they are makes the decision easier than guessing.
Hibernation
Free servers use our Smart Hibernation System: after 5 minutes with nobody online, the server sleeps to conserve resources, then wakes automatically within 30-90 seconds when someone tries to join. Premium servers never hibernate, they run 24/7 with instant connectivity regardless of player activity, which matters if your community expects to drop in at any moment without a wake-up delay.
Renewals
Free servers require periodic renewal clicks from your dashboard to stay online, how often depends on your specific plan. Miss the window and the server suspends (recoverable) before eventual deletion if left unrenewed too long. Premium servers have no renewal system at all, you pay for the billing period and it simply stays up.
Resources
Free plans start with real, usable resources, but premium plans offer meaningfully more RAM, CPU, and storage at every tier, with dedicated AMD Ryzen 9 hardware on many premium plans. If you consistently find yourself needing a RAM boost on a free server, that is usually a sign premium resources fit better.
Ads
Free servers may involve a short ad as part of certain actions (like activating a RAM boost), this is part of what funds free hosting at no direct cost to you. Premium servers involve no ads anywhere.
Support
Both plans get real support through our Discord, premium plans receive priority handling on tickets.
Server limits
Free accounts are limited to one active free server at a time. Premium accounts can run multiple servers depending on what you purchase.
When free is genuinely the right call
A small friend-group survival world, testing a modpack before committing to it, or a project where occasional short wake-up delays are a non-issue, free covers all of this well, and it costs nothing to try.
When premium is worth it
A community that expects the server to always be instantly available, a project that has outgrown free-tier resources even with boosts, or simply wanting to skip renewals and ads entirely.
